INDIANA, PA - The eighth-seeded Winston-Salem State Lady Rams
(29-12) opened the 2011 NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional
Tournament on a down note when the team took a 7-0 loss to the
top-seeded host Indiana (Pa.) Crimson Hawks (34-6), Friday. The
loss came in spite of a solid game by the Lady Rams that saw the
team fight for all seven innings of the game.
The Lady Rams struggled offensively in the loss as the team
managed just three hits. Three WSSU players recorded hits in the
loss with freshman outfielder Tanaya Pettus,
senior outfielder Candace Spinks,
and senior catcher Kayla Woodbury all
recorded one hit each. Sophomore pitcher Brittany Lane added
a sacrifice hit as well. Defensively, the Lady Rams had their hands
full with the Crimson Hawks totaling 10 hits in the game. The seven
runs allowed were the most since February.
The game was a defensive battle early with both teams
going scoreless for the first two innings, but the Lady Rams
allowed four third innings to the Crimson Hawks. It was a pair of
two-RBI singles that did the damage to the Lady Rams. The team
allowed another pair of runs in the fourth inning to fall behind
6-0. The Lady Rams were able to make some key plays in the game as
the Crimson Hawks loaded the bases in the sixth inning, but the
Lady Rams held their opponents to just one run in the inning and
forced the game into the full seven innings.
Lane (16-6) took the pitching loss, going all seven innings with
six strikeouts and only two walks allowed.
The Lady Rams will return to action tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. when
the team takes on the loser of the #4 California (Pa.)/#5 Kutztown
game. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU
