Lady Rams Score 10 Fourth-Inning Runs in Win Over Johnson C. Smith

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – It took a while for the Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (24-16, 15-1 CIAA) to wake up, but they did in a big way with a 10-0 win over the Johnson C. Smith Lady Golden Bulls (16-25, 6-10 CIAA), Sunday morning. The Lady Rams scored all 10 runs of the game in the fourth inning after heading into the inning with just one hit and no runs scored.

The final score was no indication of the play in the game as there was quality defensive play by both teams. Heading into the fourth inning, the two teams combined for just three hits. However, the Lady Rams exploded for a fourth-inning rally that saw the team score 10 runs on eight hits and took advantage of two JCSU fielding errors.

WSSU sophomore infielder Tanaya Pettus led the way for the Lady Rams with a two-for-three effort at the plate with three RBI in the game. She accounted for half of the Lady Rams' scores in the game. WSSU junior pitcher Brittany Lane (8-4) took home the pitching win, going all five innings of the game with seven strikeouts in five innings.

With the win, the Lady Rams complete the regular season with a 24-16 overall record and a 15-1 record in the CIAA. The team also finishes as the CIAA Southern Division Champions with a perfect 8-0 record in the division. The team will open play in the 2012 CIAA Softball Championship Tournament in Petersburg, Va., Thursday.
