Late Inning Rally Propels WSSU Rams Past Millersville Marauders, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The WSSU Rams used an eighth inning rally to score three runs to pick up their first win of the 2013 season, with a 3-2 victory over Millersville University.

WSSU improves to 1-3 overall, while the Marauders of Millersville fall to 0-1.

Millersville's Mark Stuckey got the Marauders going early, as he doubled down the left field line. After a strikeout, Stuckey advanced to third on a wild pitch and Kurt Seiders walked, and stole second base two pitches later. Dan Johnson singled up the middle, scoring Stuckey and Seiders, giving Millersville a 2-0 lead.

Both teams battled throughout the middle innings but could not cross any runs, as both teams squandered opportunities, as the Rams left 12 men on base, and the Marauders 7.

In the Rams eighth, German Reyes walked to start the inning. Levi Grassley singled to right field, advancing Reyes to second. After a Millersville pitching change, Aaron Jones walked to load the bases for the Rams with no outs. Tyler Hickernell walked, scoring Reyes and still leaving the bases full with no outs. Rafael Gonzalez hit into 6-4-3 double play, scoring Grassley and tying the game at 2-2. Christopher Constantine was hit by a pitch before Brandon Harrison reached on a throwing error by the ss, scoring Jones and giving the Rams their first lead.

WSSU's Michael Drye (1) pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to pick up save. John Markley (1-0), who came in to pitch for the Rams in the seventh inning, picked up the win, going 2.0 innings, giving up one hit while striking out three. Peter Schultz pitched 6.0 innings surrendering six hits and two earned runs. He also struck out three while walking one.

Millersville used five pitchers on the evening, with Tim Mayza going 5.1 innings giving up five hits, while striking out five and walking one. Evan Kirsch (0-1) threw one inning giving up three hits and two earned runs, while walking one. He picked up the loss for the Marauders. Adam Zipko also pitched 1.0 inning, giving up one run and one hit, while striking out one and walking two batters. Brian Black came in and threw three pitches before leaving with an elbow injury.

Winston-Salem State was led by Paco Martin who hot at the plate in the frigid outdoor temperature, as he finished 4 for 5. Levi Grassley went 2 for four with one run scored, while Brandon Harrison went 1 for 5 and Rafael Gonzalez finished 1 for 4 with an rbi. Tyler Hickernell picked up an rbi as well for the Rams .

For Millersville, Jeff Heisey finished 3 for 4, while Mark Stuckey, Dan Johnson, Tyler McDonald and Tyler Orris each finished 1 for 4. Dan Johnson also had two rbi's.

These two teams will square off again tomorrow at 1:00 pm at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem, NC.
