Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The #16 ranked Winston-Salem State University Rams overcame 135 yards in penalties, and
Phillip Sims threw for a career high three touchdowns, as the Rams rolled to a 36-13 homecoming victory over St. Augustine's University Saturday afternoon in front of 16,555 fans.
With the win WSSU moves to 6-1 overall, 4-0 in the CIAA and 2-0 in the southern Division, while St. Augustine's falls to 2-5 overall, 2-2 in the CIAA and 1-1 in the Southern Division.
Winston-Salem State got on the board first, after holding the St. Augustine's Falcons to a quick three and out on their first possession, Rudy Johnson picked up 17 yard on the first play for the Rams, and five plays later Maurice Lewis barreled over the goal line to give WSSU an early 6-0 lead after the fail PAT attempt.
The WSSU defense looked solid throughout the first quarter, as they control the Falcons and forced three punts and a missed field goal from St. Augustine's University.
Before the end of the quarter, WSSU would find pay dirt once again, as Phillip sims would lead the Rams on a five play 72 yard drive, capped off with a 21 yard touchdown pass from Sims to Eric Williams, pushing the Rams to a 13-0 first quarter lead.
St. Augustine', who always plays the Rams tough regardless of records, was once again going to give a great showing against the ranked Rams.
The Falcons would break into the scoring column twice in the second quarter on 33 and 45 yard field goals to cut the WSSU lead to 13-6, coming down to the final few minutes of the first half.
But with 3:33 left in the half, Phillips Sims strong arm would find an open Brenden Felder from 30 yards out for another score, giving the Rams a 20-6 lead heading into the locker room as halftime.
In the third quarter, St. Augustine's would score on a 10 yard pass from Cyril Davis to Jordan Turkvant with 5:43 to go in the quarter to cut WSSU's lead to 20-13.
But the Rams would answer right back as Phillip Sims led the Rams on 1 10 play, 58 yard drive, when he would find Jerry Goodson open in the flat for a four yard score to boost the lead back to 13, at 26-13.
The WSSU Rams would finally put the game away in the fourth quarter with a 10 points scoring burst. Maurice Lewis would score from seven yard out with 14:565 left to play, and Alejandro Suarez would close out the game scoring with a 23 yard field goal with 2;34 to go, to give the Rams the final score of 36-13.
Winston-Salem State would gain 453 yards of offense (1998 rushing, 255 passing), while St. Augustine's would have 334 yards of offense (97 rushing, 237 passing).
Offensively, Tyree Massey led the Rams rushing attack with 81 yards on nine carries, while Mustafa Greene rushed for 46 yards on nine carries. Maurice Lewis finished with 10 carries for 34 yards and two touchdowns.
Phillip Sims finished the afternoon going 11 of 17 for 173 yards and three touchdowns, while Rudy Johnson went five of 14 for 82 yards and a career high three interceptions.
Brenden Field had five catches on the afternoon for 77 yards and one touchdown, while Marcel Caver had three catches for 80 yards. Eric Williams caught three passes for 47 yards and a touchdown, and Mustafa Green had two catches for 41 yards. Jerry Goodson had one catch for a four yard touchdown as well.
Defensively, WSSU was led by Duvontae Covington, who had a game-high eight tackles and a tackle for a loss, while Aliquan bullock had seven tackles and one tackle for a loss. James Hickman and Paris Baxter had five tackles each, with Baxter also having a tackle for a loss and a pass breakup. Terry Ross, Larry Hearne, Cameron Sullivan and Alfy Hill each had four tackles, with Hearne also getting a pass breakup and Hill had one sack and a tackle for a loss.
