Box Score DURHAM, NC – The #11 Winston-Salem State Rams rolled up 543 yards of total offense, while the defense allowed a season low, 22 yards, as the Rams throttled Shaw University 61-10 Saturday at Durham County Stadium.
With the win, WSSU improves to 8-1 overall, 6-0 in the CIAA and 4-0 in the Southern Division, while Shaw drops to 3-6 overall, 2-4 in the CIAA and 1-3 in the Southern Division.
It wouldn't take long for WSSU to break into the scoring column, as with just 1:28 off the clock, Phillip Sims would find an open Eric Williams in the back of the endzone to give the Rams the early 7-0 lead.
After a series of punts from both teams, WSSU would once again find the endzone, as this time Rudy Johnson would find an open Brenden Felder across the middle and Felder would do the rest to reach the endzone to give WSSU a 14-0 lead with 7:07 left in the first quarter.
On Shaw's next series, it really began to go downhill in a hurry, as on the first play Marquis Grizzle would put the ball on the ground and the Rams Michael Bloomfield would pounce on the ball giving WSSU a first down at the Shaw 24.
Three plays later, Rudy Johnson would find a wide open Deshean Townsend in the back of the endzone for another Ram score, boosting their first quarter lead to 21-0.
The Shaw Bears would finally crack the scoreboard early in the second quarter, as Marquise Grizzle would score from five yards out to cut the Rams lead to 21-7.
The Winston-Salem State special teams would set up the next Rams score, as William Johnson would pin Shaw deep, as his 45 yard punt would be downed at the one yard line.
On Shaw's next play, the Rams Alfy Hill would bring down Grizzle behind the line of scrimmage for a safety, pushing WSSU's lead to 23-7.
After a WSSU fumble, Shaw would get the ball back and on the short field, would convert on a 21 yard field goal to trim WSSU's lead to 23-10.
Winston-Salem State would take the ensuing kickoff and march 75 yards in 10 plays down the field, and Tyree Massey would cap the drive with a four yard scoring run to give the Rams a 30-10 advantage.
The Rams defense would keep gas pedal pressed to the floor, and after another short series from Shaw, Rudy Johnson would ignite the Rams offense for a chance at another score before the half.
WSSU would get the ball back with just under 2:00 left before the half, and would take the clock down to 2 seconds in the half when Tyree Massey would score his second touchdown of the day from one yard out to give the Rams a commanding 37-10 halftime lead.
The second half would be almost a carbon copy of the first half, as the Rams offense would dominate and the WSSU defense would suffocate the Bears as the Rams would ring up more points on the scoreboard.
The cold, windy and raining temperatures could not slow down the red hot Rams offense, and early in the third quarter after the Rams defense would get the ball back to the offense, Maurice Lewis would break off a 35 yard scoring run, to push the Rams ahead 44-10.
Less than five minutes later Winston-Salem State would be knocking on the door again, as Mustafa Greene would find the endzone from 11 yards out, to give WSSU a 51-10 advantage.
The WSSU defense would once again hold Shaw to a very short series, and after the five play drive, the Bears would be forced to punt the ball back to the Rams.
It wouldn't take long for WSSU to find paydirt, and Rudy Johnson would guide WSSU downfield on a 70 yard nine play drive, and Johnson would take it in himself on the right side from seven yards away to give the Rams a 58-10 advantage.
Winston-Salem State would put points on the board once more, with 1:42 left in the game, kicker Alejandro Suarez, would connect on a 36 yard field goal to give the Rams the final score of 61-10.
The WSSU offense was explosive on this cold day, as they rolled up 543 yards of offense (291 rushing, 252 passing), while the Rams defense was even better, allowing the Bears just 22 yards of offense on the afternoon.
Maurice Lewis led the way for the Rams as the senior rushed for a season high 155 yards on 17 carries and one score. Lewis afternoon gave WSSU their first 100 yard rusher of the season. Mustafa Greene added 46 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown, while Bronson Greene finished with 35 yards on eight carries. Rudy Johnson rushed for 29 yards and one score, and Tyree Massey added two rushing scores.
Rudy Johnson finished the afternoon going 15 of 21 for 241 yards and two touchdowns, while Phillip Sims finished one of six with an interception, for just 11 yards and one touchdown pass. Justin Johnson went zero for three in passing attempts.
Brenden Felder led the WSSU receivers with three catches for 50 yards and a touchdown, and Jamal Haizlip also finished with three catches for 39 yards. Kenneth Patterson, Deshean Townsend and Michael Benis each had two catches, with Townsend picking up a touchdown. Donovan Rasberry, Paris Harris, Eric Williams and Marcel Caver each had one catch, with Williams also picking up a touchdown.
Defensively for WSSU, Omari Williams and Alfy Hill led the attack with four tackles and a sack each, and both also picking up three tackles for loss. Terry Ross, Casey Davenport and Conor O'Neal had three tackles apiece, with Ross also picking up a tackle for a loss and Davenport coming away with three tackles for loss. Nine other players finished with two tackles each, with Michael Bloomfield picking up a sack, a tackles for a loss and fumble recovery. Aliquan Bullock also picked up a fumble recovery for the Rams defense.
WSSU will travel to Fayetteville, NC and Luther "Nick" Jeralds Stadium, to take on the Broncos of Fayetteville State for the CIAA Southern Division title and a chance to advance to the CIAA Championship Game. Kickoff is schedule for 1:30 PM.
