FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (19-10, 12-1 CIAA) remained perfect in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division when the team took a 3-1 road win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (8-17, 4-2 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Lady Rams took the win behind a great overall effort on both sides of the ball.
As a team, the Lady Rams finished the game with nine hits, including a three-for-four effort at the plate by junior third base Katrina Bartlett. She finished the game with an RBI to lead the team as well. Freshman pitcher Chyna Riley added a pair of hits, including a triple, and two runs scored.
Riley got things started in the fourth inning when her triple was followed by an FSU fielding error that put the Lady Rams ahead 1-0. Senior outfielder Tanaya Pettus kept things going in the fifth inning when she hit into a fielder's choice that scored junior Kiah Ruffin.
After allowing a sixth inning score by the Lady Broncos, the Lady Rams closed things out in the seventh inning when Bartlett hit an RBI single that scored Riley.
Freshman pitcher Mercedes Hargett took home the pitching victory, going six innings with four hits allowed, three walks and four strikeouts.
The Lady Rams will return home for their next action when the team hosts the Bluefield State Blues, Tuesday afternoon. For more information on Lady Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com.
