Box Score Rams are now in solo first place in Southern Division with Livingstone loss
WINSTON-SALEM, NC – Winston-Salem State had four players finish with double figure scoring, and the Rams defense was stifling down the stretch, as WSSU rolled to a 83-71 win over Fayetteville State Saturday at the CE Gaines Center.
With the win Winston-Salem State improves to 15-8 overall, 8-6 in the CIAA and 6-2 in the Southern Division. WSSU's win coupled with Livingstone College's loss to Johnson C. Smith, propels the Rams into first place in the Southern Division. Fayetteville State falls to 13-12 overall, 6-8 in the CIAA and 3-5 in the Southern Division.
It was back and forth contest early, as neither the Rams or Broncos would be able to gain control, until WSSU was able to surge ahead by four points at 13-9 with 15:44 on the clock in the first half.
Fayetteville State would erase the Rams lead, and go ahead by four, but WSSU would answer right back and push their lead to eight points with 3:20 left in the first half.
The Broncos would fight back and cut the Winston-Salem State lead to just one at 34-33 at halftime.
FSU would start the second half strong and by the 14:32 mark, had pushed out to a seven point lead at 47-40.
Winston-Salem State would fight back with a 7-0 run to tie the game, coming off the strength of a monstrous dunk from Javan Wells on the baseline over two Fayetteville State defenders, before the team would once again go back and forth.
WSSU would then go a 20-6 run to gain control of the game, and cruise to a 83-71 win.
Winston-Salem State would take a 34-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Winston-Salem State was led in scoring by Donta Harper, who finished with 20 points, five rebounds, four assists and four blocked shots. Javan Wells added 18 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal, and Marquez Jones also added 18 points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal. WyKevin Bazemore added 10 points and six rebounds, while CJ Ford added eight points and two steals. Stacy Caroway chipped in seven points, six rebounds and a steal.
Joshua Dawson led the Fayetteville State Broncos with 19 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Marquette Hill added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Anthony Shelton and Torian Showers each finished with 11 points.
The WSSU Rams will look to continue their recent success, when they host Johnson C. Smith, Wednesday for Senior Night.
