Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams fought valiantly for nine innings, but could not hold off the #14 ranked Catawba Indian in extra innings, as the Rams would fall 7-1 at BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem.
With the loss, Winston-Salem State falls to 22-8 overall, while #14 Catawba improves to 24-5 overall on the season.
Catawba was able to crack the scoring column early when they would plate a run in the first inning, to go out in front 1-0.
Neither team would threaten again until midway through the game when the Rams got a gift from the Catawba Indians in the sixth inning.
WSSU would tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning on an error from the Catawba Shortstop who dropped a pop up off the bat of Dylan Dombrowskas that allowed Phillip Page to tie the game at 1-1.
The game would eventually go into extra innings, where Catawba would break the game open with six run in the top of the 10th inning.
Phillips Page went one for two with a run scored, while Des Roberts went one for three. Gavin Culler and Alex Grub each went one for four.
WSSU used four pitchers in the game, with Sam Burton went the first 2.0 innings, allowing one run on one hit with one walk and two strikeouts. Jordan Carlton pitched 3.0 innings, allowing two hits, two walks while striking out three and Aaron Hatch and Jordan Cummings each went 2.0 innings. Each allowed two hits with two strikeouts. Devin McLemore picked up the loss, going just 0.1 inning, allowing six runs on four hits with one walk. Hayden O'Neal finished the final 0.2 innings with one hit.
Winston-Salem State will host the Virginia State Trojans in a four game weekend conference set, on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday the two teams will play a double header at Mando Field in Mocksville, NC, and will return to BB&T Ballpark in downtown Winston-Salem on Sunday. Games will begin at 1:00pm each day.
