Box Score AUGUSTA, GA – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-5) played three strong quarters, but the team fell short in the fourth quarter of a 68-62 road loss to the Paine Lions (3-2), Sunday afternoon. The loss came in spite of one of the better overall performances by the Rams this season.
The Rams' 62 total points were the third highest scoring effort of the season and highlighted a strong offensive performance by the team. As a team, the Rams shot a solid 33.3% (22-of-66) from the floor along with shooting 73.9% (17-of-23) from the free throw line. WSSU senior center Taylor Boyd led the way for the Rams with 14 points off the bench. Sophomore guard Brionna Pate added 12 points off the bench as well. Senior forward Jasmine Carter added 10 points. Senior guard Trei Torain had her second great effort in a row when she nearly pulled off her second straight double-double. She totaled eight points with a team-high nine rebounds in the game.
The first half looked good for the Rams as the team played the Lions to a 14-14 tie, before staying with the Lions in the second and taking a 31-32 deficit into the locker room at halftime. The Rams had another solid third quarter as they kept the game within reach, 43-45. Both teams would explode offensively in the fourth quarter, but the Rams didn't' quite have enough bang as Paine outscored the team, 23-19 to seal the Rams' 68-62 loss.
The Rams fall to 1-5 overall and will return to action, Wednesday evening when the team hits the road to take on the Brevard College Tornados in a 6:00 p.m. game.
