Rams Open Snowbird Tournament with 6-3 Loss to California (Pa.)

Box Score

MYRTLE BEACH, SC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (1-6) softball team opened the 2016 Snowbird Tournament on a down note when the team took a 6-3 loss to the California (Pa.) Vulcans (2-1), Saturday morning. The Rams took the loss in spite of some solid play at the plate as the team totaled eight hits in the loss.

Though the Rams had little problem getting hits, the team struggled to get runs across the plate and some defensive issues plagued the team as well with the Rams totaling four fielding errors in the game. WSSU junior second base Chyna Riley led the way for the Rams with a three-for-four performance at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Fellow junior pitcher Mercedes Hargett added a two-for-four performance with a run scored as well.

The Rams were able to put three runs on the scoreboard with freshman Rebecca Demko hitting and RBI single in the fifth inning while Riley added an RBI double in the inning as well. Hargett rounded out the WSSU scoring effort with a seventh-inning RBI double that scored Riley as well.

Hargett (0-4) took the pitching loss when she went all seven innings with six runs allowed (three earned). She also recorded four strikeouts.

The Rams would return to action later in the day to take on the Mansfield University Mounties. For more information on Rams softball, contact the WSSU Office of Athletic Media Relations at (336) 750-2143 or log on to www.WSSURams.com
