Box Score RALEIGH, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (10-12, 5-7 CIAA) kicked things into gear when the team took a dominating 67-42 win road win over the Saint Augustine's Falcons (3-19, 0-12 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The Rams took the win behind a strong overall team effort as all 12 Rams took the court to wear down the Falcons for their second straight victory.
As a team, the Rams saw some great play at both ends of the court as they shot an impressive 43.3% (29-of-67) from the floor while holding the Falcons to shooting just 24.6% (15-of-61) on their home court. In addition to some quality offensive play, the Rams also had a strong rebounding effort when they out rebounded the Falcons 49-39 in the win. Four WSSU players reached double-digit scoring in the game with sophomore center Kandace Tate leading the way with a double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds in the game. Junior forward Sha'Quira Palmer added a near double-double with 10 points and seven rebounds. Junior guard Trei Torain rounded out the effort with 10 points and a block.
The Rams had to fend off an early run by the Falcons early, but the team persevered to take control and never looked back. After the first quarter, the Rams found themselves trailing the Falcons 8-12, but the team would not be deterred. Once the team turned up its defensive effort the Falcons could find no answer. The WSSU defense kicked into gear at the 7:24 mark in the first quarter as they held the Falcons without a field goal for the remainder of the quarter.
Once the Rams' defensive effort kicked into gear in the first half, the Rams were able to turn their attentions to the offensive end of the court. It was then that the Rams truly took the game over and never looked back. The Rams took their first lead of the game at the 6:27 mark in the second quarter when a Tate tip-in put the Rams ahead, 16-14. The tip-in was a part of a 10-2 run by the Rams that left the team leading 18-14. From there, the Rams allowed just two more points to the Falcons as they built a 26-18 halftime lead, the largest of that point.
From there, the Rams used their size and depth to dominate the remainder of the game as they outscored the Falcons, 22-11 in the third quarter and 19-13 in the fourth. Eventually, the Rams built an 18-point lead, 46-28 on a lay-up from sophomore forward Briana Arnold at the 1:16 mark. The lay-up capped a seven-point run for the Rams. A Tate tip-in at the buzzer would push the WSSU lead to 19 points, 48-29.
Though fully in control, the Rams could not just cruise in the fourth quarter as Saint Augustine's scored 13 points, but the effort would not deter WSSU. Once junior guard Trei Torain hit a lay-up at the 9:48 mark to give the team a 50-29 lead, the Rams maintained a 20-point cushion for the remainder of the game. The team pushed its lead to as many as 27 points, 67-40 after a free throw from senior guard Jazmyn Saunders with just under a minute left to play. In the final minute, the Rams were able to breathe easy as they cruised to their second straight win.
With the win, the Rams improve to 3-3 in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Southern Division and 5-7 overall in CIAA play. The Rams will return home for a home match up against the division-leading Shaw Lady Bears, Wednesday evening.
