WSSU Rams Walk-Off With 7-6 Win Over California (Pa.) Vulcans

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. –Winston-Salem State's Brandon Fowler scored on a double to deep right field off the bat of Landon Steiner, to give WSSU a 7-6 walk-off win over California University of Pennsylvania Wednesday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark in Winston-Salem, NC.

With the win, WSSU moves to 10-11 overall, while the Vulcans of California (Pa.) fall to 5-9 on the season.

California (Pa.) scored first, breaking open a scoreless game in the third inning with three runs on three hits and one WSSU error to move ahead 3-0.

WSSU finally got on the board in the fourth, when Landon Steiner led off the inning with a solo home run to left center field. Emilio Abreu got the Rams closer with a two run triple to right field, that scored Randy Norris and Ivan Acuna, and Willie McRae brought home Abreu with a single to left field to give the Rams their first lead at 4-3.

The Vulcans would tie the game in the top of the fifth, on an rbi single, off of WSSU pitcher, Devin McLemore, bringing the score to 4-4. They would retake the lead in the sixth when a run scored on a throwing error by Corey Shelton trying to throw out a base runner, to give California a 5-4 lead.

Winston-Salem State would retake the lead in bottom of the seventh inning, when Brandon Fowler walked and stole second. Nathan Steger singled to center, advancing Fowler to third. Landon Stiner would come through again with a single to left, scoring Fowler and moving Steger to second. Michael McNamara would walk, loading the bases, before Ivan Acuna would come through with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Steger, to give WSSU a 6-5 lead.

Heading into the ninth inning with Jordan Cummings on the mound, the Rams seemed to be in good shape to close out the game, but California's Andrew Grace would homer to left field to tie the game at 6-6.

Brandon Fowler led off the bottom of the ninth with a great at-bat, and eventually doubled down the left field line. After an intentional walk to Nathan Steger, Landon Steiner would come to the plate. Steiner would double to deep right field over the fielders head, allowing Brandon Fowler to score from second to give the Rams the walk-off win, 7-6.

Landon Steiner paced the Rams' offensive attack, going 3 for 4, with three runs batted in and scoring one run, while Emilio Abreu went 1 for 4 with one run scored and two runs batted in. Brandon Fowler went 3 for 5 with two runs scored, including the game winner, and Nathan Steger finished 3 for 4 with one run scored. Phillip Page finished 2 for 3, and Ivan Acuna went 1 for 3 with a run scored and one run batted in. Willie McRae went 1 for 5 with one run batted in. Randy Norris also scored one run.

Jordan Cummings picked up his third win, going the final 1.1 innings, allowing one run, on one hit with a strikeout. Kanoa Hironaka started the game for WSSU, and went 3.o innings, giving up three runs on four hits, with one walk. Tyler Scearce went 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits, with a strikeout and a walk. Devin McLemore pitched 1.1 innings, allowing one run, two hits and two walks, while striking out one batter. Hayden O'Neal went 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit with a strikeout.
