Rams Break Out for 8-0 Win Over Bluefield State

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (20-15) stayed hot when the team took an 8-0 win over the Bluefield State Blues (2-14), Saturday afternoon. The Rams combined a 12-hit team performance with a stellar defensive performance to take the shutout victory for the second time in the last four games.

As a team, the Rams had a great overall effort in the victory. The Rams totaled 12 hits while allowing just four hits to the Blues. Freshman Taonya Stanely led the way for the Rams with a two-for-three batting effort with two runs scored and an RBI. Fellow freshman Tierra Delaney added a two-for-three effort of her own with two runs scored and two RBI.

The Rams scored early and often to take the win. The team struck first in the second inning when a Bluefield State passed ball allowed Stanely to score. It was in the third inning when the Rams broke out as the team scored five runs during the inning. A Stanely RBI single scored junior first base Mercedes Hargett. Sophomore outfielder Anna Marino added an RBI single of her own to score junior third base Rebecca Demko. Delaney would score the big hit of the game when she hit a two-RBI single to score both Marino and Stanely. Junior short stop Idaysha Quinones added an RBI triple to score Delaney and left the Rams on top, 6-0 heading into the fourth inning. In the fourth inning, Demko hit an RBI single to scored junior pitcher Chyna Riley before freshman Jasmine Holloman hit an RBI walk-off sacrifice fly that scored Delaney and gave the Rams the eight-run fifth-inning victory.

Riley (7-4) took the shutout pitching victory with no runs allowed on four hits. She also added six strikeouts with just one walk.

With the win, the Rams pick up their 20th win of the season and improve to 20-15. The team will return to action, Wednesday, when they head to Wilson, N.C. to take on the Barton Bulldogs in another non-conference doubleheader.
