Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC – The Winston-Salem State Rams (13-11, 9-5 CIAA) clicked on all cylinders when the team took an 80-69 senior day win over the Fayetteville State Lady Broncos (6-17, 4-10 CIAA), Saturday afternoon. The win saw the Rams put on their most impressive offensive showing of the season as the team heads down the final stretch of the regular season.
The Rams took the win behind one of their best offensive performances of the season as they tied a season-high with 80 points in the game. As a team, the Rams shot a scorching hot 45.8% (27-of-59) from the floor. WSSU senior forward Jatzmin Johnson led the way for the Rams with a career-high 15 points in the game while fellow senior center Taylor Boyd added 11 points with a team-high eight rebounds.
The Rams got things started in a big way. The Rams took control of the game early when a three-point play by Boyd with 4:23 left in the first quarter capped a 13-7 start for the Rams. From there, the Rams pushed their lead to as many as seven points after a lay-up from sophomore guard Brionna Pate with 00:16 left kept the Rams on top, 19-12. However, the team allowed a pair of Fayetteville State free throws with four seconds left in the quarter to leave the Rams on top 19-14 at the end of the first quarter.
While the Rams controlled the first quarter, the team had fend off a Lady Bronco resurgence in the second quarter. A free throw from senior forward Trei Torain left the Rams ahead, 22-16 with 8:55 left in the quarter. However, it was then that Fayetteville State made a 10-2 run that left the Rams trailing, 24-26 with 4:59 left in the quarter. Senior guard Jazmyn Saunders had an answer when she hit a three-pointer six seconds later to put the Rams back on top, 27-26. The Rams mounted a 7-2 run later in the quarter that put WSSU back on top. 36-29 with 1:27 left to play. The run included a three-pointer and a free throw from Johnson. From there, the Rams held off the Lady Broncos to take a 38-33 lead into the locker room at halftime.
After controlling the first half, the Rams cruised in the second half to claim the win. The team got things started with a great third quarter effort. The team pushed its lead into double-digits when senior forward Jasmine Carter hit a three-pointer with 4:44 left in the quarter to go ahead, 48-38. The Rams allowed the Lady Broncos to cut their lead in half, 51-46 with 1:56 left to play in the quarter. However, the Rams mounted a 7-3 run to close the quarter with a 58-49 lead.
The Rams finished the game out with a great fourth quarter effort. The Rams went ahead by as many as 13 points after a lay-up from Pate left the team on top, 64-51 with 7:24 left to play. The Rams once again fell victim to a Fayetteville State run as the team's lead was cut down to six points, 60-66 with 3:58 left to play. However, the Rams would not relent with a furious run in the final minutes of the game. The Rams scored 16 points in the final three minutes of the game, including a three-point play from Johnson that put the Rams on top, 80-67 before on last FSU lay-up at the buzzer.
With the win, the Rams improve to 13-11 overall and 9-5 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play. The team also improves to 6-2 in CIAA Southern Division play and remains firmly in second place in the division.
