Box Score CARY, NC – WSSU's Emilio Abreu hit a two-run home run, and the Rams scored three times in the third inning and three times in the fourth inning, as they would come away from a cold night in Cary, NC with a 7-4 win over the St. Rose College Golden Knights.
With the win, Winston-Salem State moves to 9-11 overall, while St. Rose falls to 1-9 on the 2017 baseball season.
Saint Rose was able to plate a run in the bottom of the second inning, to jump out in front 1-0, before the Rams exploded in the third inning with three runs.
In the third, Ivan Acuna was hit by a pitch, and Emilio Abreu smacked a two-run home run to deep left center field, and Landon Steiner singled home Michael McNamara, to give WSSU a 3-0 lead.
The WSSU Rams would also plate three runs in the fourth, as Randy Norris would start the inning with a single and a stolen base. Norris would eventually come home on a wild pitch. Emilio Abreu would continue to swing a hot bat, and would triple to left center field, allowing Ivan Acuna to come around to score. Randal Ortiz would double down the left field line, scoring Abreu, to give the Rams a commanding 6-1 lead.
The Golden Knights would not give in, scoring one in the fifth inning, and scoring two more times in the sixth to make the game tight.
But the WSSU Rams would ad an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, when Ivan Acuna doubled to left field, allowing Randy Norris to come around to score, giving the WSSU Rams a 7-4 lead heading into the Golden Knights final at-bat.
Landon Steiner would slam the door on St. Rose, and the Rams would come away with a 7-4 victory.
Emilio Abreu went 3for 4 with three runs batted in and two runs scored with a home run and a triple, while Randy Norris finished 2 for 5 with two runs scored. Landon Steiner was 1 for 3 with a run batted in, and Randal Ortiz went 1 for 5 with a run batted in and a double.. Michael McNamara went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a double, and john Garcia was 1 for 3. Ivan Acuna finished 1 for 3 with a run batted in and two runs scored with a double for the Rams.
Kanoa Hironaka picked up the win for Winston-Salem State, throwing six innings allowing trhee earned runs, while walking two and striking out three. Landon Stiner picked up the save, striking out three in the ninth inning.
