Rams Come Up Short Against The Eagles

Box Score

Winston-Salem State surrendered 10 second half points, allowing N.C. Central to claim a come-from-behind 20-13 win at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium in Durham. The Eagles scored the game-winning touchdown with 61 seconds remaining.

It was the first meeting between the two teams since a 34-27 Rams win on September 11, 2010. Central takes an all-time 23-22 lead in one of North Carolina's biggest HBCU rivalries.

WSSU overcame a 3-0 Eagle lead in the second quarter when sophomore Jobanni Esparza connected on the first of two field goals from 22 yards. It capped an eight-play, 46-yard Rams drive that lasted four minutes, eleven seconds.

The Rams defense, led by senior Ta'Shaun Taylor's game-high ten tackles and senior Deiontae Jones' nine tackles, would hold the Eagles scoreless for the remainder of the half.

WSSU mounted another scoring drive late in the second quarter, culminating with Esparza's second field goal, a 37-yarder, with 1:42 to play before halftime.

The Rams mounted their most impressive drive of the game in the third quarter. Junior quarterback Cameron Lewis connected with freshman Antjuan Collins on a 19-yard pass for WSSU's only touchdown in the game. Esparza kicked the point after, giving the Rams a 13-3 lead with 10:48 remaining.

Central put up 17 unanswered points, and the Eagles' defense did not allow WSSU to advance any further than Central's 45-yard line in the game's final 25 minutes.

Lewis, the East Tennessee State transfer, accounted for 252 of the Rams' 263 yards total offense. In his first start, he scrambled for a net of 62 rushing yards and completed 18 of 31 passes for 190 yards and one touchdown. He accounted for 16 of the WSSU's 26 rushes.

Collins led the Rams' receivers with six receptions for 51 yards. Freshman Garrett Whetstone had two catches for 44 yards. His 28-yard catch was the longest play of the game for WSSU.

The Division II Rams held their MEAC Division I opponent to 285 yards total offense. Kalen Allen (8 tackles, 5 unassisted) joined teammates Taylor and Jones to lead the WSSU defense.
