WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team's home winning streak ends as Virginia Union defeated the Rams 70-67 in overtime Saturday night inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
The Rams moved 9-2 (1-1 CIAA), while the Panthers moved to 10-1 (1-0 CIAA). WSSU was on a 21-home game win streak dating back to January of 2020.
WSSU was led by
Jaylon Gibson who finished with 17 points, eight rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.
Samage Teel finished with 15 points and two steals and
Jonathan Hicklin finished in double figures scoring ten points.
The game was evenly matched for the majority of the first half with both teams being tied multiple times before the Rams went up six, 16-10 with 9:04 left to play in the half. Both teams were tied at 25 with 4:15 remaining but the Rams went into the half up 35-28.
The Rams went up six, 39-33 with 15:55 left in the game. The Panthers cut within four, (39-35) with 14:58 to play in the game. A lay-up from
Jaylon Gibson and a three from
Isaac Parson gave the Rams a six-point lead with 12:03 to go. The Panthers tied the game at 50-all with 9:51 remaining. Exchanging points back and forth ended regulation at 59. Union outscored the Rams 11-8 in overtime to win the game 70-67.
WSSU is back in action on Monday, December 19th hosting Bowie State at 7:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
