WISE, VA. – It was a hard-fought battle, but the Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell to UVA Wise 71-60 inside the David J. Prior Convention Center.
Valenica Carroll led the Rams with 10 points and six rebounds.
Kennedi Simmons added nine points and
Jainaya Jones and
Amaya Tucker had eight points each.
Taniah Wilkins led the team with 12 rebounds.
It was a back-and-forth first quarter, but with two seconds remaining UVA Wise took a one-point lead, 18-17 to end the quarter. UVA Wise went on an 11-0 scoring run to take a 35-24 lead going into halftime.
With 5:37 left to play in the third, Wise went up 19 (47-28).
Amaya Tucker hit a jumper to come within 17 (47-30) with 5:07 left to play. UVA Wise ended the third up 51-39.
Taniah Wilkins hit a pair of free throws to bring the Rams within ten (55-45) with 8:23 left to play in the game.
Valencia Carroll hit a couple of free throws with 57 seconds left to bring the Rams within 12 (68-56. She then hit a layup with 18 seconds left to bring WSSU within 10 (70-60). UVA Wise won the game 71-60.

The Rams will be back in action on Saturday, December 15 to begin Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play hosting Lincoln University at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center. All the CIAA games during the month of December will have free admission if you bring a canned good and or toiletry item.
