Box Score Elizabeth City State outscored the visiting Winston-Salem State women's basketball team by 20 points in the paint and coasted to a 65-50 victory Monday night in a Covid postponed makeup game. The loss dropped the Rams record to 10-9 overall and 6-6 in CIAA play. The Vikings improved to 16-5 and 8-4.
Amaya Tucker led the Rams with 16 points and five rebounds. Tyliah Burns was the only other Ram in double figures with 11 points. Brooke Spaulding added seven points, and Kennedi Simmons had six. The ECSU limited Kendra Ross to only three shots and two points.
It was the first meeting between the two teams since January 13, 2020. WSSU won that game 56-51 at the C.E. Gaines Center.
The Rams held a two-point lead in the first quarter on a free throw by Simmons. The only other 'SU lead would come at the 5:57 mark in the first 10 minutes when Ross scored her only basketball to give the Rams an 8-7 lead.
WSSU committed only 15 turnovers in the game, but the Vikings took advantage, scoring 22 points. The Rams could manage only 21 points off 26 ECSU turnovers. 'SU was outrebounded 43-28. The Rams led in second-chance points, scoring nine points from 10 offensive rebounds.
The Rams are back in action with a Thursday game at Claflin. 'SU will return to the Gaines Center for a 2 p.m. Saturday matchup against Fayetteville State. WSSU beat FSU in Fayetteville in January.
