Softball Splits on Day One in CIAA Round-UP

RALEIGH, N.C. -The Winston-Salem State softball team opened day one of the CIAA Round-UP hosted by Shaw going 1-1 at Walnut Creek Softball Complex Friday afternoon.

The Rams move to 4-6 after falling to Elizabeth City in game one, 9-4, but defeated Shaw, 6-5 in the afternoon game.

Game 1- How it Happened

  • The Vikings got on board early in the bottom of the first taking a 1-0 lead. Then, in the bottom of the third, Karrigan Belangia hit a four-run homerun to give the Vikings a 5-0 lead.
  • The Rams answered back in the top of the fourth after an RBI single from Teanna Davis made the score 5-1. The bats stayed hot in the inning with Kendal Hudson hitting an RBI single to right field and Makyla Brown hitting an RBI double to bring the Rams within two. (5-3)
  • Isabel Mugaas hit a two-run homerun to increase the Vikings lead to 7-3 in the bottom of the fifth. They added one more fun in the fifth inning and two in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 10-3.
  • Alleshia Pullen hit her second home run of the season in the top of the seventh bringing the final score to 10-4.

Game 2- How it Happened

  • The Bears came in hot scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead over the Rams.
  • WSSU answered back cutting into the lead with three runs first starting with Malia Simmons hitting a two-run RBI and Alexis Smith hitting an RBI double to make the score 4-3 in the top of the third.
  • The Rams then tied the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Tymiah Winbush.
  • Then, in the top of the fifth, Winston-Salem took a 5-4 lead on a passed ball, then added another run in the top of the sixth to take a 6-4 lead.
  • Shaw tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh adding one more run, but a batter interference call gave them their third out and Winston the victory.
  • Kendall Hudson moves to 2-2 on the season after pitching the entire game and had seven strikeouts.
