RALEIGH, N.C. -The Winston-Salem State University volleyball team defeated St. Augustine's 3-1, (25-19, 26-28, 25-17, 25-21) inside Emery Gymnasium Monday night.
The Rams improved to (4-5, 1-1 CIAA) while SAU moves to (0-2, 0-2 CIAA).
Set one was a back-and-forth match with both teams being tied at 10 points each until the Rams went on a 5-0 run to increase their lead. SAU scored nine more points, but the Rams closed out the set by scoring 10 more points to take the set 25-19 and lead the match 1-0.
The Rams opened set two on a 4-1 run before St. Augustine's went on a scoring run of their own going up 7-4. Points were exchanged throughout the entire match, but it was the Falcons who capitalized on a bad set from the Rams and a couple of service aces to take the set, 28-26, and tie the match 1-1.
It was another back-and-forth set between the Falcons and Rams before SAU went ahead 21-14. The Rams fought back starting with a kill from Raven Gray and Sanaa Lanier to make the score 21-16. WSSU kept attacking and eventually tied the match at 23 all. Sanaa Lanier had the final two kills of the set to help the Rams take the set, 25-23, and go up 2-1 in the match.
The Falcons opened set four on a 6-1 run before WSSU answered with a 7-2 run to tie the set at 8-8. Two final scoring drives secured the 25-21 set in favor of the Rams and helped them take the match, 3-1.
