WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell in a 65-61 close contest to Fayetteville State Saturday afternoon inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
The Broncos improved to 11-6 (7-2 CIAA), while the Rams moved to 10-7 (6-3 CIAA).
Amaya Tucker led the Rams with 19 points and six rebounds, while
Kennedi Simmons added 13 points. Valencia Carrol added 10 points and
Taniah Wilkins added eight points.
The first quarter was a slugfest as both teams came out trading baskets. With 3:55 left to play in the first quarter, the score was tied at 8-8. To end the quarter the Rams went on a 9-2 run to take the lead over the Broncos 10-17 to end the first quarter.
Amaya Tucker and Kenndi Simmons hit back-to-back threes with under two minutes left to play in the half to give the Rams 5 point lead.
The Rams went into the half with a 27–33-point lead.
WSSU started the second half strong with a layup from
Jakaiya Mack and three from Kenndi Simmons to extend the Rams' lead to nine points. The Broncos battled back and took the lead after a three by Imani Elliot with 33 seconds left in the third quarter. With 5:47 left to play in the game,
Valencia Carroll made three free throws to give the Rams a 55-53 point lead. The Broncos took a 60-58 lead with 52 seconds left and knocked down free throws to seal the game 65-61.
The Rams are back in action on Thursday, January 26th hosting Johnson C. Smith at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
