Women’s Basketball Defeats Salem University Saturday Afternoon

FROSTBURG, M.D.- The Winston-Salem State women's basketball team defeated Salem in a close contest 71-66 for their first win of the season inside Bobcat Arena.
 
The Rams improved to (1-1, 0-0 CIAA). Amaya Tucker was named to the All-Tournament team.
 
Kennedi Simmons led the Rams with 18 points and eight rebounds, while Amaya Tucker had 16 points. Tolisha Walker also scored double figures with 11 points. Playing only 13 minutes Chloe Williams scored nine points.
 
In the first quarter, the Rams began the game on a 12-0 run, which saw Amaya Tucker score the first eight points for the Rams. Despite a Tigers 12-6 run the Rams led after the first quarter 18-12.  Mid-way through the second quarter the Tigers went on a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game 25-24. Back-to-back jump shots by Starasia Bell-Freeman and Kennedi Simmons gave the Rams a 28-25 lead at halftime.
 
Early in the third quarter Amaya Tucker hit a three-pointer to extend the lead to 33-25. Kennedi Simmons hit a three-pointer to make the lead nine, 43-34 with 4:17 left in the quarter. Going into the fourth quarter the Rams were leading 45-40. The Tigers went on a 10-0 run to take a one-point lead, 53-52 with 5:18 left in the fourth quarter. The Rams regained the lead with two made free throws by Chloe Williams. Amaya Tucker hit two huge free-throws to give the Rams a 67-66 lead with 33 seconds left.
 
Off a Chloe Williams steal, as she was fouled, she hit two big free-throws to give the Rams a three-point lead 69-66 lead with 26 seconds left. The Tigers missed a game-tying three and a block by Chloe Williams, Kennedi Simmons rebounded the block and was fouled. Simmons hit two free throws to put the game away. 
 
The Rams will travel to Wilson, North Carolina, on Wednesday, November 15th to take on Barton College inside Wilson Gymnasium. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
