BALTIMORE, MD- The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball advances to the quarterfinals of the CIAA tournament after beating St. Augustine University Wednesday morning.
Jaylen Alston led the Rams with 16 points and eight rebounds and was named the CIAA Food Lion MVP of the game.
Isaac Parson and
Nathan Springs added 12 points each and
Jaylon Gibson dished in 11.
Jaylen Alston kicks things off for the rams and scores the game's first four points. After the first media timeout, the rams led 9-2 with 15:51 left to play in the first half. The Rams continued to extend their lead after an
Isaac Parsons three with 12:30 left to play in the half. With 7:33 left to play the Rams continued to assert their dominance inside after a dunk from
Jaylon Gibson to put the Rams up nine. The rams went into halftime leading 30-15 after continuing to dominate the post and knock down free throws.
The Falcons started the second half on a 6-0 run but WSSU countered with a 6-0 run of their own.
Nathan Springs gave the Rams a huge boost in the second half by coming off the bench and giving the Rams four quick points. With 8:00 minutes left to play the Rams were up 46-26. St. Augustine tried to make the game interesting cutting the lead to 56-41 but
Jaylen Alston responded with a three-point play.
The Rams won the game 65-49 and will play Claflin tomorrow night, February 23 at 8 p.m. at the CFG Bank Arena.
