RALEIGH, N.C. – For a second week in a row, the Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team used an extra five minutes to defeat a CIAA opponent. The Rams defeated St. Augustine's 72-70 inside Emery Gymnasium.
The Rams improved to 16-5 (8-4 CIAA), while St. Augustine's moved to 5-16 (2-10 CIAA).
Samage Teel and
Jaylon Gibson both finished with 17 points for the Rams. Gibson also recorded eight rebounds.
Nathan Springs added nine points and Ketron "K.C." Shaw dished in eight.
The Rams were down 10 before Xavier Fenell dunked the ball, and a steal by
Jaylon Gibson led to a three from
Jaylin Parker to help cut into the Falcons' 19-14 lead.
Jeremy Dixon hit a three to bring the Rams within one, 22-23 with 5:53 to play in the first half. The game was tied at 23-all with 4:42 remaining in the half. SAU went into halftime leading 32-28.
SAU led by ten, 40-30 with 16:41 left in the game. Nate Springs hit a three with 13:31 on the clock to make the score 38-44. The Rams kept battling trailing 55-52 with 6:37 to play in the game.
Isaac Parson hit a huge three with 1:43 remaining to bring the Rams within two, 63-61. The teams were all tied at 63 with 43 seconds left after a lay-up from K.C. Shaw.
The Rams pulled away in overtime, winning 72-70.
Winston is back in action on Thursday, February 9th hosting Claflin at 8 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center. The game will also be streamed on HBCUGo.
