Lady Rams Fall in a Tough Loss to St. Augustine’s

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fought hard but fell in a tough battle to St. Augustine's 91-80 inside Emery Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

WSSU moved to 12-8 (8-4 CIAA), while SAU improved to 8-12 (4-8 CIAA).

Amaya Tucker led the Rams with 15 points and shot 10-for-14 from the field. Taniah Wilikns had her fifth double-double of the season finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Hadiya Balser added 13 points while Valenica Carroll added 11 points on the afternoon.

The Falcons were led by Lauren Banks who finished with 33 points.

The Rams ended the first quarter up one, 16-15. The Lady Falcons opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run before Jainaya Jones hit a jumper to bring the Rams within eight, 26-18. WSSU went into half-time trailing by ten, 40-30.

With 6:25 remaining in the third quarter the Rams cut the Falcons' lead to 34-42.

A huge defensive stop from Amaya Tucker turned into a made three from Valencia Carroll to bring the Rams within four, 41-45 with 3:58 to play in the third quarter. The Falcons ended the quarter leading 63-55. SAU led by 13, 73-60 going into the final media timeout of the game.

Kennedi Simmons hit a three to bring the Rams within ten, then forced a turnover and got fouled, made a pair of free throws to come within 65-73. WSSU fought hard but SAU pulled away with the 91-80 victory over the Rams.

Winston-Salem State will be back in action on Thursday, February 9th hosting Claflin at 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center. The game will also be live streamed on HBCUGo.
