Women’s Basketball Comeback Fall Short to Bluefield State Saturday Afternoon

BLUEFIELD, W.V.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team comeback falls short to Bluefield State inside Ned E. Shott Gym.
 
The Rams moved to (6-10, 0–6 CIAA) after losing 53-61.
 
Both Chloe Williams and Kennedi Simmons scored 12 points. Taniah Wilkins and La'Niya Simes each had six points.
 
Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 19-of-47 from the field, 13 -of- 21 from the free-throw line, 2-of-8 from three. The Rams grabbed 32 rebounds, 22 points off turnovers, 24 points in the paint, 34 bench points, and forced 34 turnovers.
 
In the first quarter, the Big Blue jumped out to an early 9-0 lead with 6:12 left. Kennedi Simmons broke the ice for the Rams with two free throws, 9-2 with 6:01 left. The Rams cut the lead down to five points on a Kennedi Simmons jumper making the score 12-7 with 3:41 left. The Big Blue would finish the quarter on an 11-2 run, taking a 23-9 lead into the second quarter. In the second quarter, with the Big Blue up 30-12 with 4:58 left, the Rams outscored the Big Blue 8-3. Kennedi Simmons made a lay-up making the score 33-20 going into halftime.
 
In the second half, the Rams began the third quarter on a 16-2 run giving the Rams their first lead of the game. La'Niya Simes hit a big three-pointer giving the Rams the lead 36-35 with 4:42 left. The Big Blue closed the quarter on a 9-2 run, taking a 44-38 lead into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, the Big Blue pushed their lead back to ten points 50-40 with 7:09 left. The Rams couldn't overcome the Big Blue run.

The Rams will begin divisional play by hosting St. Augustine's University on Thursday, January 18th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
