Women’s Basketball Squeeze Past St. Augustine For First Conference Win Thursday Night

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team picks up their first conference win by edging out St. Augustine 69-64 inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
 
The Rams improved to (7-10, 1–6 CIAA).
 
Amaya Tucker led the Rams with 20 points, followed by La'Niya Simes with 17 points and five rebounds. Sierra Hunter recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
 
 Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 21-of-50 from the field, 21-of-30 from the free-throw line, and 7-of-19 from three. The Rams grabbed 26 rebounds, 35 points off turnovers, 20 points in the paint, 17 second-chance points, and forced 23 turnovers.
 
In the first quarter, the Rams jumped out to an early 6-0 lead as La'Niya Simes connected on two free throws with 7:05 left. Chloe Williams would stretch the lead to seven points hitting a three-pointer, making the score 12-5 with 2:52 left. The Rams took a 16-9 lead going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, the Falcons started the quarter on an 8-0 run taking the lead 17-16 with 8;27 left. Kennedi Simmons hit a three-pointer pushing the Rams' lead back to four points 21-17 with 7:20 left. Kennedi Simmons would extend the lead to five points with another three-pointer 24-19 with 5:39 left. The Rams would take a 30-26 lead into halftime.
 
In the second half, La'Niya Simes extended the Rams lead to seven points hitting a three-pointer 36-29 with 8:13 left in the third quarter, beginning a 9-0 run. Jakaiya Mack would cap the runoff with a lay-up, making the score 42-29 with 7:18 left. The Falcons answered back with a 15-0 run giving them the lead 44-42 with 2:03 left. Amaya Tucker quickly answered back with a three-pointer 45-44 with 1:45 left. The Falcons took a 48-47 lead going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, down 55-50, the Rams went on a 10-0 run. Amaya Tucker connected on a huge three-pointer in a rocking C.E. Gaines Center 60-55 with 2:09 left. With the game tied at 62-62, La'Niya Simes hit the go-ahead jumper 64-62 with 40 seconds as the crowd erupted. The Rams would close out the game at the free-throw line.

The Rams will hit the road traveling to Orangeburg, South Carolina, taking on Claflin University on Saturday, January 20th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
