Women’s Basketball Fall to Claflin Saturday Afternoon

ORANGEBURG S.C.- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell to Claflin 67-58 inside Tullis Arena.
 
The Rams moved to (7-11, 1–7 CIAA).
 
Both Tolisha Walker and Sierra Hunter recorded a double-double. Tolisha Walker led the Rams with 13 points and 12 rebounds, followed by Sierra Hunter with 11 points and 12 rebounds. La'Niya Simes chipped in with eight points.
 
Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 24-of-64 from the field, and 9-of-17 from the free-throw line. The Rams grabbed 41 rebounds, 26 points off turnovers, 34 points in the paint, 17 second-chance points, and forced 23 turnovers and 23 bench points.

How it Happened:
In the first quarter, the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead, Amaya Tucker answered back with a three-pointer making the score 4-3 with 8:23 left. Christiana Mclean cut the Panthers lead to one point with a jumper 11-10 with 2:30 left. Amaya Tucker hit a jumper as time expired, tying the game up at 14-14 going into the second quarter. In the second quarter, The Rams went on an 8-0 run extending their lead to 24-16 with 6:14 left, highlighted by back-to-back field goals by Kennedi Simmons. The Panthers went on a 7-0 run cutting the Rams lead down to one point 24-23 with 2:56 left. Tolisha Walker would answer back with a jumper pushing the score to 26-23 with 2:19 left. The Rams would take a 29-26 lead into halftime.
 
In the second half, La'Niya Simes extended the Rams lead to seven points with a lay-up 35-28 with 7:05 left in the third quarter. With the Rams up 39-28 with 5:24 left, the Panthers went on a 7-0 run cutting the Rams lead to four points 39-35 with 3:38 left. La'Niya Simes answered back with a lay-up and the score was 41-35 Rams with 3:24 left. Sierra Hunter pushed the Rams lead to six points with a lay-up, 45-39 with 1:49 left. The Panthers finished the quarter on a 6-2 run cutting the score to 47-45 going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter, with the score tied up at 50, La'Niya Simes connected on a lay-up and was fouled, with the missed free-throw the score was 52-50 with 5:25 left. The Panthers went on an 8-0  run giving them a six-point lead 61-55 with 2:26 left.

The Rams will host Shaw University on Wednesday, January 24th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside C.E. Gaines Center.
