Women Fall to Shaw in Midweek Showdown

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell to Shaw University 57-51 Wednesday night inside the C.E. Gaines Center.

The Rams moved to 7-12 (1-8 CIAA), while Shaw improved to 10-8 (5-4 CIAA).

Key Scorers
Kennedi Simmons finished with 13 points while shooting 4-of-7 from three and Jakaiya Mack had eight points and three steals. Defensively, Tolisha Walker led the way with 15 rebounds and also added six points. Taniah Wilkins and La'Niya Simes both also finished with six points.

Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams scored 22 points in the paint, 15 points off turnovers, and had 28 bench points. As a team, they shot 21-of-62 from the field.

How it Happened
Shaw opened up the first quarter on an 5-2 run. After leading by four, the Rams came within two, 12-10 on a lay-up from Tolisha Walker with 2:36 remaining in the quarter. The Bears ended the first quarter up six, 16-10. Tolisha Walker started a run for the Rams scoring the first two points to start the second quarter, 16-12. The Rams then came within three, 17-14 at the 6:07 mark. A three from Kennedi Simmons and a layup from Jakiya Mack tied the game at 19 with 5:19 remaining in the quarter. WSSU would then take an eight-point lead, 32-24 going into halftime.

The Rams remained their lead throughout the third quarter, but the Bears crawled their way back into the game and only trailed by three at the end of the quarter. The fourth quarter came down to the wire as both teams exchanged points back and forth, but the Bears tied the game at 45 and then took a 46-45 lead with 6:23 left in the game. They increased their lead by four at the 4:39 mark. The Rams would come within three, 54-51 but the Bears pulled away winning by six.

The Rams will travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina to take on the Broncos on Saturday, January 27th. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
