WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Winston-Salem State University women's basketball team fell to Claflin University 56-45 Saturday afternoon on senior day inside the C.E. Gaines Center.
The Rams moved to (8-16, 2–12 CIAA).
Sierra Hunter led the Rams with 14 points and six rebounds, followed by
Jakaiya Mack with nine points and
Tolisha Walker chipped in with seven points.
Quick Inside the Numbers
The Rams went 16-of-49 from the field, 12-of-20 from the free-throw line, and 1-of-8 from three. The Rams grabbed 32 rebounds and scored 24 points in the paint, 18 points off turnovers, while the bench dished in 30 points.
In the first quarter,
Kennedi Simmons scored first for the Rams on a lay-up making the score 2-0. Points were exchanged back and forth with the quarter ending in a 12-12 tie. The second quarter was just as competitive on the defensive end where the Rams only scored five more points to Claflin's six.
In the second half,
Sierra Hunter tied the game at 23-23 on a jumper with 7:00 left in the third quarter. Jakiaya Mack gave the Rams their first lead of the second half, 29-27 on a jumper with 2:27 remaining.
Sierra Hunter gave the Rams a 33-31 lead going into the fourth quarter with a jumper.
Tied at 33 In the fourth quarter,
Amaya Tucker eventually put the Rams back in front with two made three-throws 36-35, with 6:55 remaining. The Panthers once again regained the lead and
Alexandria Warren cut into it when the Rams were down 44-40, on two made free throws with 4:09 remaining in the game. The Panthers outscored the Rams 12-5 for the remainder of the game.
