Softball Goes 1-4 in the CIAA/SIAC Challenge

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team opened its weekend in the CIAA/SIAC challenge in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The Rams played against Clark Atlanta, Kentucky State, Bowie State, Tuskegee, and Edward Waters.

On day one, the Rams opened the day against Clark Atlanta falling 4-3. CAU scored its first run in the top of the first and followed up with three more runs in the top of the third. Malia Simmons got the Rams on the board with a fly-out to right field scoring
Aniyah Jackson. The Rams added two more runs in the fourth. BreAnna Steele pitched her first game with the Rams throwing seven innings with five strikeouts.

Later in the day, WSSU defeated Kentucky State, 5-4. KSU scored the first in the top of the fourth inning and the Rams answered back with a run in the bottom of the fifth. WSSU scored two more runs in the sixth inning to take a 3-1 lead over the Thorobreds. KSU answered back two runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game and force extra innings. They scored one more run in the top of the ninth and WSSU scored two runs to seal the deal on a single from Malia Simmons.

WSSU went the rest of the weekend dropping games to Bowie, Tuskegee, and Edward Waters.

They will host the University of Mount Olive for their home opener on Thursday, February 22 for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
