WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team swept Claflin Saturday afternoon at Twin City Ballfield.
The Rams went a perfect 10-0 in the Southern Division after winning game 1, 12-9, and game 2, 7-1 to move to 13-8 (12-4 CIAA, 10-0 SD).
How it Happened – Game 1
The Panthers got on the scoreboard early with a run in the top of the first inning but the Rams answered back with two runs to take a 2-1 lead going into the top of the second. The Panthers scored a run in the second and third to take a 3-1, but
Aniyah Jackson hit homerun to tie the game at 3-3 to end the third inning. Claflin scored another run in the top of the fourth to regain the lead. Then, A. Jackson hit another homerun to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth. Claflin scored five runs in the top of the seventh inning to take a 9-4 lead. WSSU scored eight runs in the bottom of the seventh inning including a walk-off double with two outs by Ale'eah Graham sealed the victory for the Rams.
Jyla Thomas pitched the entire game moving to 4-3 on the season and recorded six strikeouts.
How it Happened – Game 2
The Rams' bats stayed hot taking a commanding 6-0 lead after three innings. Claflin got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth but WSSU also scored in the bottom of the fourth (7-1). With the commanding lead,
BreAnna Steele closed the game with two strikeouts and the last batter flew out to center field to give the Rams the victory.
Steele pitched the entire game moving to 5-8 on the season and she recorded five strikeouts.
WSSU will be back in action on Thursday, April 25 hosting Elizabeth City for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Twin City Ballfield.
