WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team opened divisional play against the Broncos of Fayetteville State and defeated them in both games at Twin Cities Ballfield.
The Rams won game one 7-2, and game two 11-3 to move to 4-18 (4-4 CIAA, 2-0 division) on the season.
How it Happened –
game one
Fayetteville took an early 0-1 lead at the top of the first inning. The Rams quickly added five runs after
Malia Simmons hit her first home run of the season and grand-slam in the bottom of the second. (5-1)
Taisha Bratton and
Aniyah Jackson scored helping the Rams add two runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a (7-1) lead over FSU. The Broncos added two runs to come within the top of the fifth inning and the scoring stopped there as the Rams secured the 7-2 victory.

The Rams took a 3-0 lead at the bottom of the second after
Alicia Carrington hit a double to right field scoring
Alea'ah Graham, and
Malia Simmons singled to right field scoring
Alicia Carrington and
Tyeisha Gist. FSU scored one run in the top of the third inning (3-1) but the Rams answered back with three more runs of their own to make the score 5-1. WSSU kept the bats hot adding four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase the lead to 9-1. The Broncos added two more runs in the top of the fifth, but WSSU closed out the game with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to mercy rule Fayetteville. (11-3).
The Rams will be back in action tomorrow, Saturday, April 6 at Shaw University. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at noon at Walnut Creek.
