SALEM, WV – The Winston-Salem State University softball team closed out play at the Salem Tournament with a 9-5 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan, highlighting a weekend of competitive matchups against regional opponents.
The Rams battled through four games, showing consistent offensive production and resilience before finishing the weekend on a high note.
The Rams moved to 3-5 on the season.
Pitt-Johnstown 7, WSSU 5
WSSU opened the tournament with a hard-fought contest against Pitt-Johnstown, falling 7-5.
The Rams totaled eight hits, led by
Aaliyah Rodriguez, who recorded two hits and two RBIs.
Koralie Morin added a multi-hit performance as WSSU stayed within striking distance throughout.
Morin also pitched 6.0 innings facing 31 batters and had one strikeout.
WSSU 9, West Virginia Wesleyan 5
Winston-Salem State capped day one of the tournament with its most complete performance, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan, 9-5.
The Rams delivered their top offensive output of the weekend, capitalizing on scoring opportunities and maintaining control late in the game to secure the win.
Aaliyah Rodriguez hit her second home run of the season and
Layla Smith had a big day going 3-of-4 with two doubles.
Nevaeh Cruz earned the win after pitching 4.0 innings and
Jyla Thomas earned the save pitching 6.0 innings.
Wheeling 12, WSSU 6
On day two, WSSU dropped a high-scoring matchup to Wheeling, 12-6.
The Rams produced nine hits and scored six runs, highlighted by a four-run inning.
Nevaeh Cruz led the offense with a two-hit effort, while multiple players contributed RBIs.
Riley Demers hit her first homer of the season in the sixth inning.
Koralie Morin threw 5.0 innings with five strikeouts and Neveah Cruz pitched 2.0 innings.
Indiana (Pa.) 6, WSSU 2
WSSU wrapped up the tournament with a 6-2 loss to Indiana (Pa.).
Rodriguez again led the Rams offensively with two hits, while
Koralie Morin and
Jyla Thomas each drove in runs. The Rams scored both of their runs in the fourth inning.
In this game, Cruz pitched 2.2 innings and
Jyla Thomas threw 3.1 innings with two strikeouts.
The Rams will be back in action on March 26-28 participating in the CIAA Round-up in Raleigh, North Carolina.
