RALEIGH, N.C. - The Winston-Salem State University softball team defeated Elizabeth City State University 6-3, then fell to Bluefield State 7-5 at Walnut Creek.
The Rams moved to 4-6 (1-1 CIAA) on the season.
How it Happened - Game 1 Elizabeth City State
The Vikings took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 4th on a bases-loaded walk. WSSU answered back in the bottom half of the 4th, with a Makayla Winson two rbi's single tying the game at 2-2. A TaKara Ware RBI single drove in Makayla Wilson, giving the Rams a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 4th. The Rams extended their lead to 6-2, on a Nevaeh Cruz two RBI single, driving Asyah Smith and Riley Demers.
Koralie Morin pitched 2.1 innings and had three strikeouts. Nevaeh Cruz threw 3.0 innings and allowed no hits. Jyla Thomas closed out the game, throwing 2.0 innings and two strikeouts.
How it Happened – Bluefield State
The Big Blue took a 2-0 lead on an RBI single in the top of the 1st. BSU extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the 2nd on a fielder's choice. The Rams got on the board with a Kira Byrant RBI single, scoring Asyah Smith in the bottom of the 2nd. The Big Blue took a 7-1 lead in the 4th with an RBI single. WSSU cut the lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the 5th on Riley Demers' RBI single, scoring Ilyana Smith.
Koralie Morin pitched 1.1 innings, giving up five hits. Nevaeh Cruz came in relief and pitched 3.0 innings, giving up three hits and no runs. Jyla Thomas finished the game with 2.2 innings, allowing no hits, no runs, and striking out two.
The Rams will return to action tomorrow for Day Two of CIAA Round-up, taking on Virginia Union at 1:00 p.m., then Bowie State at 6:00 p.m. Both games will be held at Walnut Creek.
