RALEIGH, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team competed in a challenging slate of CIAA Roundup games, facing Virginia Union, Bowie State, Lincoln (Pa.), and Virginia State to wrap up the weekend. The Rams showed resilience throughout, highlighted by a strong win over Lincoln (Pa.).
Game 1: Virginia Union 7, WSSU 1
The Rams opened day two of the roundup against Virginia Union but fell 7-1.
Virginia Union used a big second inning to take control, scoring five runs—four of them unearned—to build an early cushion. WSSU managed seven hits in the contest but struggled to convert offensively.
WSSU plated its only run in the seventh inning, avoiding the shutout, but could not overcome the early deficit.
Game 2: Bowie State 4, WSSU 2
In game two, the Rams dropped a close contest to Bowie State, 4-2.
WSSU broke through in the third inning and added another run in the seventh, but Bowie State capitalized on a three-run third inning and added insurance in the fourth.
- WSSU recorded six hits with no errors defensively
- Bowie State finished with eight hits and took advantage of timely scoring
Despite keeping the game within reach late, the Rams were unable to complete the comeback.
Game 3: WSSU 3, Lincoln (Pa.) 1
The Rams bounced back in a big way with a 3-1 victory over Lincoln (Pa.).
WSSU struck first in the second inning when
Laniya Rouse drove in a run. After Lincoln tied the game with a solo home run in the fourth, the Rams responded with a decisive fifth inning.
- WSSU scored two runs in the fifth inning, both coming with bases-loaded walks
- Kira Bryant sparked the offense with multiple hits and scoring opportunities
- The pitching staff held Lincoln scoreless over the final three innings
The Rams' timely hitting and disciplined plate approach proved to be the difference in the win.
Game 4: Virginia State – Roundup Finale
WSSU closed out the roundup against Virginia State.
While full scoring details were limited, the Rams continued to compete in a tightly contested matchup to conclude the weekend slate.
