WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Winston-Salem State University flag football team delivered a dominant showing at the CIAA Roundup, posting a perfect defensive performance in a pair of shutout victories over Claflin University and Bowie State University.
WSSU 7, Claflin 0 (OT)
In a defensive battle that remained scoreless through regulation, the Rams leaned on timely playmaking to secure the overtime win. The game featured limited offensive movement on both sides, with defenses controlling the tempo throughout.
The turning point came late in the fourth quarter when Tyeshia Gist made a crucial interception to halt Claflin's momentum and preserve the shutout. In overtime, Winston-Salem State capitalized, as Chakira Generette connected with Leah Bowman for the game-winning touchdown, sealing a 7-0 victory.
WSSU 27, Bowie State 0
The Rams followed with a dominant performance against Bowie State, showcasing a balanced offensive attack and continued defensive excellence.
Chakira Generette led the charge, tossing two touchdown passes to Amyya Brown and Leah Bowman while also adding a rushing touchdown. Akeylah James contributed on the ground with a rushing score of her own, helping WSSU build a commanding lead.
Defensively, the Rams remained relentless, pitching their second consecutive shutout of the day and never allowing Bowie State to find rhythm.
WSSU will be back in action on April 10-11 at the CIAA Championships on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University
