RALEIGH, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University softball team fell to Shaw University on Friday afternoon inside Worthdale Park.
Makayla Vinson hit a two-run homer in the top of the first inning to give the Rams an early 2-0 lead over the Bears. WSSU added a run in the top of the fourth to increase its lead to 3-0. The Bears tied the game after scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth and two runs in the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Both teams scored a run in the eighth inning to send the game into the ninth inning. Shaw took the game on a wild pitch walk-off to win the game 5-4.
Koralie Morin pitched 8.2 innings and had a season-high nine strikeouts.
In game two, the Rams fell 5-3 to the Shaw Bears. WSSU scored first in top of the first inning after scoring two runs, but Shaw answered backed with two runs in the bottom of the second inning to tie game. They added two more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 4-2 lead. The Rams scored one more run in the top of the fourth to come within the 4-3 lead. Shaw secured the game with one more run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the lead.
Jyla Thomas pitched 5.1 innings with three strikeouts.
WSSU will conclude its season on Monday, May 4 hosting Claflin University at 11:00 am. The original senior day ceremony that was scheduled for tomorrow, May 2, will still take place at 1:00 p.m. inside the C.E. Gaines.
