Orangeburg, S.C. - As the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) released the tournament bracket, the Winston-Salem State University softball team will enter the tournament as the number four seed in the south.
The Rams will face the number one seed in the north, Bowie State on tomorrow, May 7 at 5:00 pm at Orangeburg Recreation Park in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Due to the inclement weather impacting the area the double elimination format has altered for day one. The second game of the evening will take place at 7:00 p.m.
Bowie State enters the tournament as the reigning champs and WSSU will be facing the Pitcher of the Year in Sydney Seals and Rookie of the Year Aaliyah Amos.
Layla Smith from WSSU was named to the All-CIAA second team. Also leading the Rams is
Asyah Smith who has 16 runs on 34 hits with 11 doubles, 2 home runs and 15 RBIs and
Riley Demers who has 19 hits on 25 runs with 6 doubles and 4 home runs. In the circle
Jyla Thomas leads the Rams with 65 strikeouts.
Winston-Salem State has shown resilience throughout the season, leaning on a balanced attack at the plate and key defensive efforts. The Rams have demonstrated the ability to manufacture runs with timely hitting while also capitalizing on opponent miscues.
In the circle, WSSU will look for strong outings from its pitching staff to control the tempo and keep Bowie State's offense in check. Limiting big innings and executing defensively will be critical for advancing.
Live streaming for the game can be found on the CIAA sports network and live stats can be found at www.wssurams.com.
