Nov. 25, 2005

Final Stats

Durham, N.C. - The Wingate University women's basketball team hit 31-of-37 free throws en route to a 75-61 NCAA Division II victory over Winston-Salem State University Friday afternoon at the NCCU BC Powder Thanksgiving Classic, hosted by North Carolina Central University in the McLendon-McDougald Gym.

With the victory, Wingate improves to 3-2 overall. WSSU is also 3-2 overall. The win gives the Bulldogs a split of the season series, as the Rams edged Wingate 76-74 at WSSU Tuesday night (Nov. 22).

Bulldog freshman point guard Anna Atkinson (Marion, N.C.) led Wingate's free throw parade, hitting 12-of-12 charity tosses. Atkinson finished with a career-high 16 points. Wingate junior guard Tanetra Barrett (Marshville, N.C.) and senior center Veronica Taylor (Columbia, S.C.) contributed 16 points and 10 points, respectively.

Winston-Salem State had three players hit double figures. Ram junior center Shalonda Carter led all scorers with 17 points. WSSU senior forward Janet Robinson chipped in 15 markers, while junior point guard Latoya Armstrong added 10 points.

Atkinson hit 10-of-10 free throws in the second half, including eight-of-eight in the final 1:25 as the Bulldogs kept the Rams at bay. The Bulldogs took the lead for good when Barrett hit a short jumper to put Wingate up 44-43 with 13:40 to go in the second frame.

Barrett's jumper was part of a 14-5 run that turned a 40-40 deadlock into a 54-45 Wingate lead. Barrett had eight of Wingate's 14 points during the flurry, including a fast-break hoop on an assist from Atkinson that made the score 54-45 with 10:14 remaining in the contest.

In addition to its free throw accuracy, Wingate hit 55 percent (11-of-20) of its second half field goals. The Bulldogs outrebounded the Rams 40-33, thanks to a team-best eight boards by senior forward Shannon Proffit (Christchurch, New Zealand).

Barrett added seven rebounds for the victors. Carter led the Rams with eight rebounds. In addition to her 16 points, Atkinson had a game-high six assists.

In the first half, Wingate built a 10-point lead on a Proffit basket at the 7:02 mark. Proffit's hoop gave the Bulldogs a 26-16 advantage. The Rams rallied, as junior guard Latoya Armstrong nailed a three-pointer with 57 seconds remaining to cut Wingate's lead to 32-30. The Bulldogs led 34-32 at intermission.

WSSU returns to action on Saturday at 2:00 pm as they tip off against Claflin at McClendon-McDougald Gymnasium.
