Final Stats
WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Despite a first half of play in which they shot only 37.9% from the field, the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State University put together a 65.0% shooting performance in the game's final 20 minutes of play as WSSU earned a 61-50 win over the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne College at the C.E. Gaines Center in Winston-Salem, NC on Monday evening.
The Lady Rams, plagued by a difficult shooting first half of play in which they hit only 11 of their 29 field goal attempts (.379), used a solid defensive effort that allowed the Bears to shoot a season-low 29.1% from the field in the game en route to the 11-point win.
The Lady Rams, a staunch defensive unit, forced 21 Lenoir-Rhyne turnovers which they turned into 11 points, the game's deciding margin.
WSSU and LRC battled back and forth during the first 20 minutes of play as the lead changed hands 18 times in the first half. Despite trailing the contest by as many as four points in the half, the Lady Rams took a slim two-point cushion to the locker room at halftime, leading the visitors 28-26.
The two-point lead would be just enough for WSSU as they came out of the locker room and mounted an 8-0 run to lead by 10 points, a lead which they would never relinquish, en route to their fifth victory of the season.
Leading the way for the Lady Rams were Latoya Armstrong and Janet Robinson who each tallied 12 points in the contest. Sophomore transfer from USC-Upstate Keoshia Worthy added 10 points in the win.
Pacing the losing Bears was Joanie White who recorded a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds as she was one of two LRC players to record a double-double in the contest. Shannon Jones chipped in with 15 points and 13 rebounds in the losing effort.
WSSU improves to 5-5 overall with the win (0-1 CIAA) while LRC falls to 6-5 with the loss.
The Lady Rams return to action on January 3, 2005 at 5:30 pm when they face the Lady Vikings of Elizabeth City State University at the C.E. Gaines Center as they ring in the New Year with a CIAA foe.
