Final Stats
SALISBURY, NC - Winston-Salem State University made short work of Livingstone College on Saturday evening as the visiting Rams jumped ahead early and never looked back en route to a 69-47 win over the Blue Bears in CIAA men's basketball action as the Rams improved to 8-5 overall and 3-2 in the CIAA (2-0 CIAA West) at William Trent Gymnasium.
The Rams forced 13 Blue Bear turnovers in the first half and recorded 11 steals during the game's first 20 minutes of play as senior guards Alleggrie Guinn and Corey Parker each tallied four steals in the period.
WSSU turned those 13 turnovers into 14 easy points en route to a sizeable 16-point halftime lead as the Rams made it look easy as they led Livingstone 36-20 heading into the halftime intermission.
The lead, which stood at 16 points at the half would never get any smaller than 13 points the rest of the way as WSSU coasted to the win.
True freshman Jamal Durham continued to show why he is a candidate for the CIAA's All-Rookie Team and a possible Rookie of the Year contender as he led WSSU with 12 first-half points.
To complement his four steals, Guinn added eight points during the period as WSSU's defense continued to pave the way for the Rams' offensive success.
In only his second game back from injury, forward Audly Wehner found himself in early foul trouble as a pair of infractions limited the All-CIAA performer to only two first-half points and a pair of first-half rebounds.
The second half of play was more of the same for the Rams as they continued to use defensive pressure to frustrate the Blue Bears and force more turnovers as WSSU moves to 6-0 when they record ten or more steals in a game.
Leading the way for the Rams was Alleggrie Guinn who tallied 16 points each in the contest. Jamal Durham caps a week in which he led the Rams to two wins as he recorded 14 points.
The win, WSSU's 16th consecutive victory over the Blue Bears sees the Rams improve to 8-5 overall (3-2 CIAA) and more importantly move to 2-0 in the CIAA Western Division. Livingstone College falls to 4-8 overall (0-2 CIAA, 0-1 CIAA Western Division) with the loss.
WSSU head coach Philip Stitt has never lost to the Blue Bears during his tenure at Winston-Salem State University and second-year head coach James Stinson, Jr. has yet to defeat the Rams or Stitt during his two years at the head of the Blue Bear program (0-4 versus WSSU overall).
The Rams return to action on Thursday, January 19, 2006 at 7:30 PM as they square-off against the Bears of Shaw University in Raleigh, NC in a CIAA inter-division men's basketball contest.
