Feb. 21, 2006

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, NC - The Lady Rams basketball team handed the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University a 12-point defeat on Tuesday evening at the Joel Coliseum Annex as WSSU dealt NCCU their worst loss of the 2005-06 season.

The victory would earn WSSU their third consecutive win, marking the longest win streak of the season for the Lady Rams.

The meeting would boil down to a showdown between two of the best forwards in the CIAA as North Carolina Central's Cassie King and Winston-Salem State's Shalonda Carter battled back and forth in a game of can-you-top-this.

Carter and King, both of whom are 2005-06 All-CIAA First-Team selections at the forward position, led their teams in the contest with Carter leading WSSU to the win.

Carter tallied 16 points and 13 rebounds as well as three assists and three steals in the win as she led four Lady Rams into double figures.

King, a two-time All-CIAA selection recorded a game-high 20 points in the loss.  She added five rebounds, one block and a steal in the losing effort as she and teammate Porschia Holmes (18 points) were the only Lady Eagles in double-figures.

The win improves WSSU to 10-17 overall and moves WSSU to 5-11 in the CIAA (4-6 CIAA West).  The loss is only NCCU's fifth of the season as they drop to 20-5 overall (11-4 in the CIAA and 6-3 CIAA West).

The conclusion of the game brings about the end of the 2005-06 regular season as WSSU will now awaits the release of the pairings for the start of the 2006 CIAA Women's Basketball Tournament which begins on Monday, February 27, 2006 from the Charlotte Bobcats Arena in Charlotte, NC.

WSSU will likely earn the fifth seed in the CIAA Western Division in the CIAA Tournament which will match them up against the fourth seed in the CIAA East, a pairing that will likely earn them a date against the Lady Panthers of Virginia Union University.  Final pairings will be announced on Sunday, February 26, 2006 by the CIAA Office.
