Nov. 20, 2009

Box Score

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Winston-Salem State University Rams earned their first victory of the season on Friday evening as they easily took care of the visiting Chargers of Atlanta Christian College at the C.E. Gaines Center by the score of 94-57 in front of nearly 3,000 fans.

The Chargers earned the first points of the game as Cody Crabtree converted one of two free throws only 40 seconds into the game.

Unfortunately for the Chargers and the limited number of their fans who made the five-hour drive to Winston-Salem, N.C., the Rams would prevent Atlanta Christian College from scoring for the next 5:13 as WSSU mounted a 14-0 run that effectively put the game out of reach.

The 14-0 outburst would be part of a larger 26-3 offensive onslaught that gave the Rams a 22-point advantage at 26-4 with 11:42 remaining in the first half of play as the Rams would take a 26-point lead to the locker room at halftime as they saw 10 different players record points in the first 20 minutes of play.

Second half action would prove to be much the same as the only highlight for the Chargers would be a 5-0 run during the first 1:01 of the second period of play before the Rams would mount yet another offensive run that pushed their lead to as many as 39 points.

“Our goal was to make sure that our intensity and effort was there tonight and that we kept it up for the whole game” WSSU head coach Bobby Collins said in postgame interviews.

“I think that we kept it up for about 39 minutes, and when you do that, good things happen, as evidenced by tonight's outcome” Collins added.

The game would prove to be chock full of highlights for the Rams as WSSU had three players record double-doubles for the first time since leaving the CIAA five years ago as Shelton Carter (17 points, 10 rebounds), Paul Davis (13 points, 11 rebounds) and McIntoche Alcius (10 points, 12 rebounds) all recorded double-figure points and rebounds in the victory.

The three double-doubles were not the only WSSU highlight on the evening as senior guard Brian Fisher would top the evening with 7:59 remaining in the game when he took an Andrew Jackson pass and dunked home a breakaway that earned him his 1,000th career point as a Ram.

The senior guard becomes the 26th member of Winston-Salem State's 1,000-point club.  Fisher has appeared in 89 games for WSSU with 73 starts and a career scoring average of 11.4 points per game.

In all, 12 WSSU players would record points in the contest with Shelton Carter leading the Rams in scoring for the fourth consecutive contest as he led all scorers with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

The victory moves the Rams to 1-3 overall and drops Atlanta Christian to 4-4 with the loss.

WSSU returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 8:00 p.m. as they travel across town to face the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest at the LJVM Coliseum.
