PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Winston-Salem State University freshman guard Marcus Wells led three Rams in double figures with 14 points as WSSU earned their first road victory of the season on Tuesday evening at the W.P. Hytche Center in Princess Anne, Md. by handing Maryland-Eastern Shore a 75-70 loss en route to improving to 4-9 overall.
Playing their fifth road game in their last six contests, the Rams started slowly as the host Hawks jumped out to a quick early lead by starting the game on a 7-2 run over the first five minutes of play.
Trailing by five points the Rams would awaken as an unlikely duo sparked a 10-1 Winston-Salem State offensive run over the next 2:30 of play as WSSU earned their first lead of the game.
A pair of field goals by Stephon Platt and a field goal and two free throws from Brandon Hobbs erased WSSU's deficit and looked to put the Rams in control of the game.
However, the two teams would trade leads three other times in the first half of play as both the Hawks and Rams used offensive outbursts to pull ahead before once again surrendering their advantages.
It would be the Rams who would mount the last run of the half as WSSU closed the final 4:45 of play on a 13-5 run en route to their largest lead of the half, a six point cushion, which they would take to the locker room for the halftime intermission.
Leading 38-32 after 20 minutes of play the Rams would continue to dominate the tempo as they used a 12-3 run to open the second half as WSSU pulled out to their largest lead of the game, a 15-point advantage, with just over 15 minutes remaining in the contest.
Sophomore guard Lamar Monger would be nearly solely responsible for the Rams' offensive explosion as he scored seven of his 13 points during the first five minutes of the second half en route to helping WSSU open up a cushion which they would never surrender.
To the credit of the Hawks, the home team would fail to allow the Rams to secure the victory without a fight as they chipped away at WSSU's lead, eventually paring their deficit to as few as three points before free throws by Corey Morris and Andrew Jackson sealed WSSU's fourth victory of the season.
Leading the way for the Rams was Wells and his 14 points as he led three WSSU players into double-figures. Lamar Monger joined Wells in double figures with 13 points and Paul Davis continued his streak of stellar performances as he scored 12 points and pulled down nine rebounds as he narrowly missed his fourth double-double of the season.
The victory moves WSSU to 4-9 on the season overall and most importantly snaps the Rams' six-game losing streak on the road as Winston-Salem State improves to 1-6 away from home. The win also gives WSSU an 8-1 advantage over MD-Eastern Shore all-time.
WSSU returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 4:00 p.m. as they welcome the Eagles of Coppin State University to the C.E. Gaines Center.
