HAMPTON, VA - The Winston-Salem State Lady Rams (12-14) couldn't
hold up late in a tough three-set loss to the Chowan Hawks (19-11)
in the opening match of the 2010 Central Intercollegiate Athletic
Association (CIAA) Volleyball Championship Tournament. The Lady
Rams opened the match with a strong start, but faded late in the
25-23, 25-15, and 25-10 loss.
Statistically, the Lady Rams and Lady Hawks were evenly matched,
but the team couldn't get the points they needed as the team
finished the match with 33 kills while allowing just 37 kills to
the Lady Hawks. However, the team managed to score just 15 kills in
the final two sets after recording 18 kills in the opening set.
WSSU senior hitter Ashley Harris, an
All-CIAA honoree, led the way for the Lady Rams with 11 kills and
six digs in the match. Sophomore middle hitter Mia McBroom added six
kills.
The opening set of the match was a close affair with the Lady
Rams taking an emotional 25-23 loss. The team kept things close
throughout the set, even taking an early 7-6 lead on a kill by
junior Adrianne Alexander. However, after allowing 7-2 run by the
Lady Hawks, the Lady Rams found themselves playing catch up for the
remainder of the set. The team would respond, however, jumping
ahead of the Lady Hawks 19-16. However, the team couldn't hold off
a late run by the Lady Hawks that ended the set, 25-23.
After taking the tough loss in the opening set, the struggled to
get going in the final two sets, falling into an early 8-4 deficit
in the second set and allowing a 10-4 Chowan run that ended the
set, 25-15. The final set of the match was even tougher as the Lady
Rams managed just 10 points, including an 11-3 run.
With the loss, the Lady Rams take an 0-1 record in pool play.
With only the two teams with the best record advancing, the Lady
Rams will need with both of their remaining matches of the day in
order to remain in the hunt for the 2010 CIAA volleyball
