Feb. 13, 2010

Final Stats

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Winston-Salem State University men's basketball team fell at Morgan State on Saturday afternoon in snow-bound Baltimore as the Bears led wire to wire in a contest that saw WSSU drop a 79-65 decision.

In a contest where WSSU head coach Bobby Collins and sophomore guard Lamar Monger each picked up a pair of technical fouls and were ejected, the Rams fell victim to a hot MSU team, that has yet to drop a decision to a MEAC opponent, despite Paul Davis' career-high 32 points.

The Bears would never trail in the contest as Morgan State scored the opening points of the game en route to a double-digit lead, an advantage that they would never relinquish, little more than 10 minutes into the matchup.

Morgan State increased their lead to as many as 20 points during the first 20 minutes of play as the Rams hit only 11 of their 32 first-half field goals including missing all seven of their three-point attempts in the half.

In contrast the Bears connected on six of nine three-point tries in the first half and converted nearly 77 percent of their attempts from the free throw line as they outscored WSSU 42-24 en route to an 18-point lead headed into the locker room at halftime.

The first eight minutes of the game's final period would again prove to be difficult for the Rams as WSSU would find themselves trailing by a game high 27 points as the Bears missed only two shots en route to opening up a 51-34 advantage, their largest of the game, with 12:13 remaining in the contest.

During the Bears' early second-half scoring run the Rams would see Lamar Monger pick up a pair of technical fouls and suffer an ejection from the contest as well as see WSSU head coach Bobby Collins pick up the first of what would be his two technical fouls on the day.

To their credit, the technical fouls would ignite the Rams' offense as WSSU mounted a late-game scoring run that saw Winston-Salem State cut Morgan State's lead to the game's final 14-point margin as Paul Davis scored eight of his career-high 32 points in the final eight minutes of the contest.

Despite Davis' career day the Rams would run out of time in their bid for a comeback as the Bears improved to 19-7 overall and remained flawless at 10-0 against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opponents.

WSSU junior forward Paul Davis converted 13 of his 18 field goal attempts in the contest and hit six of his eight free throw attempts on the afternoon as he shattered his previous career high of 19 points with 32 points in the loss.

Davis would lead the Rams in not only scoring but rebounding in the contest as he tied his career high with 15 boards. Davis added six blocks in the contest and tallied one steal in a career-high 37 minutes of play in which he did not turn the ball over.

Brian Fisher added 10 points as he was the only other WSSU player to score in double digits as the Rams dropped to 9-13 on the season and fell to 5-7 versus MEAC opponents.

Winston-Salem State returns to action on Monday, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. as they face the Eagles of Coppin State University.
