Three Players In Double Figures Leads Rattlers Past Rams 75-61

Feb. 27, 2010

Final Stats

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Winston-Salem State's two best players, senior guard Brian Fisher and junior forward Paul Davis, combined to score only seven points on Saturday afternoon at the C.E. Gaines Center as Florida A&M earned a hard-fought 75-61 victory over WSSU in men's MEAC basketball action.

Davis, who leads the team with 11.6 points per game this season was held to two points in 20 minutes of playing time as he found himself in foul trouble early in the first half.  The two point scoring performance marks only the ninth time this season that Davis has been held to single digits in scoring.

Fisher, the Rams second leading scorer who entered into the contest with a scoring average of 11.4 points per game hit only one of his six field goal attempts en route to only five points in 23 minutes of work as the duo was held to seven combined points and was forced into eight turnovers.

Despite the difficulties of Davis and Fisher the Rams jumped out to an early lead which they pushed to a game high 10 points with 12:34 remaining in the first half.

The Rams' advantage would be short-lived however as the Rattlers used a 19-5 scoring run over the next eight minutes as FAMU turned a 10-point deficit into a four-point advantage.

WSSU would tie the game at 29-29 but a Christopher Walker lay-up with 30 seconds to play in the first half gave the Rattlers the lead for good headed into the locker room with a 31-29 advantage.

The Rattlers opened the second half with an 11-3 scoring run to push their lead to double-digits as WSSU would get no closer than four points for the remainder of the game.

“We were just flat tonight” WSSU head coach Bobby Collins said.  “We've seen that zone all year long and it is something that we should have been comfortable with.  For whatever reason we weren't aggressive enough attacking it and it cost us” Collins added.

Brandon Hobbs led the Rams with a career-high 10 points as the senior guard hit four of his six field goal attempts and pulled down three rebounds in the loss.

Hobbs was joined in double-figures by Shelton Carter who recorded 12 points.  McIntoche Alcius led the Rams with eight rebounds.

Amin Stevens and Yannick Crowder led the Rattlers with 13 points each as they led three Florida A&M players into double-figures in the victory.

The loss drops the Rams to 11-16 overall while Florida A&M improves to 8-20 with the victory.

Winston-Salem State returns to action on Monday, March 1, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. as they play host to the Wildcats of Bethune-Cookman University at the C.E. Gaines Center.
