WINSTON-SALEM -- LaMar Monger scored 19 points to lead six different Rams scorers in double figures, as Winston-Salem State University opened the 2011-12 basketball campaign with a 104-80 win over Talladega College on Sunday in the CE Gaines Center.
Joining Monger in double figures was Justin Glover with 17 points in his WSSU debut, while WyKevin Bazemore added 14 points and five rebounds in his first game for the Rams. Chris Witherspoon added 11 points off the bench, hitting three of five three pointers, and Michael Bland and Joseph Thompson added 10 points each.
The Rams sport a different look than previous years, as this team is smaller, but quicker and head coach Bobby Collins used an up and down the court, quick tempo offense with plenty of running to his advantage, overwhelming Talladega.
WSSU led at the half 54-46, and started the second half strong, led by Justin Glover's 11 points during the run that pushed the Rams lead to 68-48.
The Rams never looked back and increased their lead to a game high 24 points with a little over 1:45 left to play.
The 104 points scored is one of the highest point totals ever scored by a Collins team in his tenure at WSSU.
Winston-Salem State forced the Tornadoes into 28 turnovers, and the Rams scored 31 points off of them. WSSU also scored 56 points in the paint and got tremendous scoring and energy from their bench, outscoring Talladega 39-19 from the subs. The Rams also benefitted from 27 second chance points.
"I thought we wore them down with our depth, and I thought we scored were about I thought we would", says Bobby Collins, in his sixth year as head coach of the Rams. "We have to get better at defending. We need defense to be our calling card, and we are not there yet. But overall I was pleased with the win. It gave us something to look at in terms of seeing where we are," says Collins.
Talladega's Kerry Harvis scored a game-high 27 points, while Howard Greer added 12 and Tarium Taylor chipped in 11. Christopher Tanzy, Haris and Taylor each pulled down six rebounds in a losing effort for the Tornadoes (0-2).
Winston-Salem State University will return to the hardwood on Friday, when they face Belmont in the Queens Final Fire Classic in Charlotte at 6:00 PM on Friday, and against host Queens College at 8:00 PM on Saturday. All games will be played at the Oven Athletic Center on the Queens College campus.
